Reflection
My international journey began before I even knew it. As a child, I was always curious about the world around me and this curiosity only grew as I got older. I wanted to learn more and understand different cultures, customs, and people outside of my own country.

When I arrived in college, this desire continued to grow and eventually became a goal for me: to further my international knowledge and explore the world. Throughout my college years, I took advantage of international opportunities such as studying abroad, international courses, and global student life events. All of these experiences helped me expand my horizons and gain a better understanding of different cultures around the world.
Studying abroad was an integral part of my journey to gain global perspectives and awareness. Before that experience, I had never left the country, so it felt like a dream when I finally got on the plane for my trip. Exploring different countries and cultures across Europe opened my eyes to how life can be viewed differently around the world. I'm proud of what this journey has given me - not only the knowledge of new cultures but also a greater sense of appreciation for the perspectives that come from other parts of the world. With this understanding, I look forward to what the future holds and hope to continue learning about global perspectives during my travels.
The international courses I took at UF provided me with an incredible opportunity to delve into the cultures of different cultures and explore new perspectives. The first class that I took during my freshman year, Geography of Africa, really piqued my interest in exploring cultures I know little about. In this class, I acquired a deeper understanding of African history and culture through the study of geopolitical changes in Africa, an exploration of ethnic groups inhabiting the continent, as well as lessons on migration patterns and other related topics. Through this course, I have learned more about Africa than ever before. My next course, Art History of the Late Renaissance, was an incredible opportunity for me to continue my exploration into foreign cultures and advance the knowledge I obtained during my study abroad in Florence. As a result, this class gave me a greater appreciation for art and enabled me to develop a better understanding of why certain works are so globally revered. Finally, my Sociology of Globalization course has not only enhanced my knowledge of the impact globalization has on the world, but it has also enabled me to gain a better understanding of global issues and how they are connected. This class is helping me see the importance of considering different perspectives to find solutions to international problems—an invaluable skill that will be essential in my future as a designer.

Overall, I am glad I've taken such enriching classes that helped me expand my global knowledge. Through these courses, I have not only gained a greater understanding of various cultures but also acquired the skills needed to think critically about global issues. I truly believe that the experiences I've gained through these classes will be invaluable as I continue to make my way into the world.

The campus life events promoted by the UF International Center have also played an instrumental role in my global development. Their screenings of various international films helped me gain new perspectives on the different cultures of our global community. Through watching movies such as the German film "Mazel Tov Cocktail" and the Ecuadorian film "Submergible," I was able to take part in societies, experiences, and stories that are outside my everyday life. These films provided me with insight into foreign lived experiences, helping me increase my knowledge and empathy for those from different backgrounds. By viewing international films, I feel as though I have gained the opportunity to expand my worldview and become a more understanding citizen of a diverse global community. The lecture I went to about Haitian and Dominican relations provided me with an understanding of the complex and multi-faceted issues that arise from an oppressive culture and system. From hearing firsthand accounts, I was able to gain a much better perspective on how this problem affects those in both countries and the rampant racism they experience. In addition, I learned more about how Haitian immigrants are marginalized throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, facing discrimination in many areas such as job opportunities, healthcare access, education, and beyond.

Overall, my experience as an International Scholar has undoubtedly strengthened and grown my professional development. I have gained a greater understanding of the diversity of our global community, increasing my insight into different cultures, histories, and societies around the world. Through these experiences, I have been able to develop stronger connections with people from all walks of life and recognize the importance of international collaboration to solve problems that affect us all. I look forward to continuing my journey as an International Scholar and further expanding my global perspectives!
